With screaming little engines up to 1,100cc, the cars of the Chichester Cup may not be the biggest or set the fastest lap times, but there’s no doubting the competitiveness of the drivers in these small-engined single-seaters.

Chichester Cup highlights

The Chichester Cup boasted by far and away the most varied field of cars of the entire Revival weekend, and it was Ray Mallock in his distinctive U2 Mk2 that led away from pole position, closely followed by Stuart Roach in the Alexis Mk2. Roach seemed to have more speed than the rest as the field streamed through Fordwater, and he breezed past Mallock on the entry to St. Mary’s to claim the lead with ease.

There was still plenty of moisture on the track surface on Sunday morning, and all cars were having a hard time maintaining status on the tarmac, but Roach appeared unflappable as he powered away down the Lavant Straight.

Things calmed down after a chaotic start, but there was still plenty of action throughout the field, Horatio Fitz-Simon suffered an extremely sideways moment in his Apache as he battled side-by-side with Charles Cook through Woodcote.

Conditions remained tricky throughout, and Anthony Olissoff found himself beached in the gravel after a spin at Lavant Corner, his stricken Emeryson bringing out the safety car to negate the 14-second lead Roach had built.

Fortunately for him, the safety car remained on the track until the end of the race, and Roach took the chequered flag to claim victory in the Formula Junior race of the 2025 Revival.

Chichester Cup Official Practice

The sheer variety of machinery on track at the Revival makes this event a relentless stream of interest. There’s always something new to look at, as the front-engined Formula Junior cars of the Chichester Cup gave us our first view of open-wheel racing of the weekend.

Formula Junior was a regular fixture at Goodwood in period, and it remains so in more recent times with a regular showcase here at the Revival. This year the field is made up of cars from 1959 and 1960, representing almost as many manufacturers as there are places on the grid, 20 in all.

It’s a fascinating line-up that made for a brilliantly competitive Official Practice session that saw nine different marques make up the top ten on the grid. The entire field was very quickly up to speed, but it was the OSCA of Joe Colasacco who set the early pace, only to be overthrown by Stuart Roach in the Alexis Mk2.

Ray Mallock in his U2 Mk2 joined the battle for pole, and began pumping in the quick times, eventually extending his cushion at the front of the field to six tenths of a second. Roach held on to second place ahead of Adrian Russell in the Condor S2, Colasacco, Alex Morton and Horatio Fitz-Simon in an Apache.

It’s a close battle at the front of the field, which bodes well for what we’re sure will be an entertaining race when the Formula Juniors return for the Chichester Cup on Sunday morning.
