If you’re after motorcycle racing at the Goodwood Revival, then the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy is the race for you. The Lennox Cup was renamed in honour of the legendary two-time Champion, who himself competed at early Revival meetings. Sheene’s last race before his passing came at the 2002 Revival, and each year we celebrate his legacy with this fitting fixture.

In the earliest days of the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy, it was 1987 500cc Champion Wayne Gardner who proved himself the man to beat. He claimed victory with a Norton Manx in the first running of the race in 2003, with Jamie Whitham claiming the Race 2 win that weekend on a similar machine. Garnder returned for a clean sweep on both races a year later, again on a Norton Manx.

In 2005, he again claimed the Race 1 win, with Race 2 going to fellow Norton rider Duncan Fitchett. Switching to a Matchless G50 for 2006 saw Gardner win both instalments, a feat he repeated in 2007.

In 2008, the race switched to the two-rider format we enjoy today. As a duo with Mark Sharrock, Gardner continued his dominance winning both races with a BSA Gold Star. A year later, he won Race 2 and the Combined Classification with Leigh Pemberton aboard a Matchless G50.

At the turn of the decade competition between riders became more open, though a Norton Manx took three overall wins in three years thanks to the respective pairings of Brogan/Bain and Fitchett/McWilliams. Machines including a MV Agusta 500/3 (2013), Vincent Rapide (2014), and Manx Norton 500 (2015) sealed overall wins, as stars including John McGuinness and Troy Corser tested their skills at the Motor Circuit to overall success in 2016 and 2018 respectively.

The great Michael Dunlop took a sweep of wins in 2021 on the MV Agusta 500/3 he shared with Steve Plater, while more recently the combination of Michael Rutter and Michael Russell have proved to be the pairing to beat, with back-to-back overall Combined Classification victories in 2023 and 2024.

As far as machinery goes, Norton dominates with 21 individual wins. To put that into perspective, the nearest rival, Matchless, has 11 wins, including in the 2025 Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy courtesy of consistent performances across the event from Glen English and Steve Plater.
