Steve Aoki brings Goodwood Three Friday Nights to cake-throwing crescendo

US superstar DJ Steve Aoki brought the 2018 Three Friday Nights at Goodwood Racecourse to an exhilarating climax on Friday 15 June, following two incredible DJ sets from Rudimental and Example + DJ Wire, with total attendance across the events just shy of 36,000.

Rudimental got the party started in style on 1 June, playing some of their biggest hits to a sell-out crowd of 12,000 racegoers. The atmosphere was one of elation throughout their hour-and-a-half set, as lasers lit up the night sky above the Parade Ring and a live saxophonist added another dimension to their music.

Example + DJ Wire spun a high-energy set to another sell-out crowd on the second night of the series on 8 June, playing some of Example’s biggest chart tracks such as ‘Changed the way you kissed me’ and ‘Kickstarts.’ Racegoers had been treated to a warm-up performance by R3wire and Varski, who set the tone for the night with their trademark adrenaline-fuelled drum and bass set.

With the final night also sold-out, racegoers were expecting a huge performance from Steve Aoki, and he did not disappoint. Regularly listed as one of the top DJs in the world, it was easy to understand why Aoki had hit such heights, as he excitedly danced, jumped and even swung around behind, and above, his decks. His trade-mark party trick came towards the end of his performance when he launched several large cakes into the crowd.

Earlier in the evening, racegoers had been treated to some unexpected entertainment, when ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get me Out of Here’ winner Georgia Toffolo took on jockey Georgia Cox in an arm wrestle in the Winner’s Enclosure. Despite being cheered on, Toffolo was unable to get the better of her opponent and Cox was declared the winner.

On the racing front, jockey Andrew Breslin drove for seven hours to get to Goodwood from North Yorkshire on 8 June, but thankfully his efforts were rewarded when he steered Danzay to win for trainer Mark Johnston. Another young rider, Sophie Ralston, had success on the night, when Oeil De Tigre registered his second win at the Racecourse this season. The pair subsequently won again at the course on 10 June.

On 15 June, Bartholomeu Dias made headlines for the wrong reasons when trying to bite one of his rivals on the run to the line. The Jim Crowley-ridden horse looked to be getting to the front when he made the unusual move, but ultimately cost himself the race, which was won by Dr Richard Kimble for Johnston, who has had the most winners of any trainer at Goodwood so far this season.

The Racecourse is now looking forward to its flagship meeting, the Qatar Goodwood Festival, which takes place from Tuesday 31 July to Saturday 4 August.
