Echoes of Damon Hill’s title win in a nostalgic Balcony Moment

Goodwood House witnessed a truly spine-tingling moment of racing nostalgia today as the iconic riff from Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain echoed across the lawns. Right on cue, 1996 Formula 1 World Champion Damon Hill powered his legendary, V10-engined Williams FW18 down towards the House.

Wearing his original 1996 Rothmans Williams racing overalls, Hill stepped out of the cockpit and walked through the cheering crowd before being warmly welcomed by the Duke of Richmond to step onto the historic balcony.

Marking 30 years since his historic title win, the moment held an incredible weight. For many younger fans in attendance who only know Hill as a television commentator, today was a powerful reminder of his elite racing legacy.

When asked if it felt like three decades had passed, Hill smiled warmly. “No, it feels like an echo. Thanks to [the Duke of Richmond], he doesn't let it die.”

The 1996 Champion had nothing but praise for the impeccable condition of his title-winning machinery and the blazing West Sussex weather. “Everything is perfect,” Hill remarked, giving credit to the mechanics who meticulously repaired and prepped the FW18 so it was completely race-ready for the Hill.

Reflecting on the magical stars-aligning nature of his 1996 campaign, he added, “You can’t plan some things, and luckily things just fell into place.” In an incredible twist of calendar synergy, Hill pointed out that exactly 30 years ago today, he was actively competing in the British Grand Prix behind the wheel of that very car.

The emotional heart of the balcony appearance came when Hill introduced his family – his wife and three children – to the roaring crowd. “They can see what dad did while he was at work,” Hill joked. He then paused for a deeply moving reflection on his father, two-time World Champion Graham Hill.

Williams Racing Team Principal James Vowles then joined the celebration, and when asked for his memories of the 1996 season, Vowles shared a sentiment felt by everyone in the crowd: “I connected with Williams when watching Damon Hill, and it was a brilliant Championship to watch.”

Looking down at the FW18 parked below, Vowles marvelled at its engineering longevity. “It’s sharp and responds to everything you do – it doesn't feel like a 30-year-old Championship-winning car.”

“It’s better than when I drove it!” Hill quipped.

Hill’s children surprised their father with the original 1996 Japanese Grand Prix trophy – from the race that sealed his world title. Looking at the iconic cup, Hill laughed to the crowd, “Fill it up with champagne, don't you?”

Reflecting on the camaraderie of the weekend, Hill shared a brilliant behind-the-scenes glimpse into the magic of the event. He noted that just earlier, he was standing downstairs in the House sharing a drink with Valentino Rossi, Mario Andretti and Lando Norris. For Hill, that exact image encapsulates the entire spirit of Goodwood: drivers from different disciplines and generations coming together as one community.
