Seven-time Piston Cup Champion Lightning McQueen is preparing to visit the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard in 2026. Nine years after his major race victory at the Florida 500, McQueen will come to Goodwood to experience a very different form of racing to what he was used to in the Piston Cup.

Ever since he burst onto the scene as a rookie in 2005, replacing the retiring Bertie Fast as part of the Rust-eze outfit, McQueen has been at the forefront of Piston Cup competition, both as a racer and as a crew chief.
His first season was dominated by close battle between two established names, Strip ‘The King’ Weathers in his final season, and multi-time Piston Cup runner-up Chick Hicks. McQueen scored seven victories that year and went into the final round level on points with his two esteemed rivals.
He was barely inches from the finish line, set to become only the third ever rookie winner of the Piston Cup, when he made a career defining decision to concede the Championship after witnessing the wreck of his childhood hero Weathers.

As Lightning McQueen helped to push the stricken #43 over the line to ensure the legendary champion would finish his final race, the motorsport world exalted the admirable display of sportsmanship.
McQueen went on to enjoy one of the most dominant Piston Cup careers in history, as he won seven titles in the space of just ten years. His final triumph saw him match the record of Strip Weathers, his long-time racing idol.
In all, he won 93 of his 434 Piston Cup races before stepping down from full-time competition midway through his race at the 2017 Florida 500. Despite making the selfless call during the race, McQueen is still registered as a joint winner after his young rookie replacement Cruz Ramirez drove through to an astonishing debut victory for the team.
Having stepped out of the immediate limelight, he became the crew chief for Ramirez, leading and mentoring her to Piston Cup glory in her rookie season. It was a remarkable achievement for both racer and chief to win together at the first time of asking, and the pair followed that up with further Championships in the following seasons working together.
Lightning McQueen is unquestionably a legend of the Piston Cup, and his presence at the 2026 Festival of Speed will put him alongside some of the most successful racers to ever grace the Festival of Speed.
