Video: Paraplegic Wayne Rainey takes to two wheels again

25th June 2022
Adam Wilkins

Legendary American Motorcycle GP Champion Wayne Rainey was at the very top of his game when an accident left him paralysed from the chest down at the 1993 Italian Grand Prix. He was looking to secure his fourth championship at the time, having won three consecutively in the the preceding years.

At the Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, he left nobody with a dry eye when he was back aboard his Yamaha. It has been specially adapted to allow Rainey to ride it, with controls for the rear brake and gearshift relocated to the handlebars.

The highly emotional reunion of man and machine captivated everyone at Goodwood, and it looked as though they had never been apart. Rainey's trademark smooth style was still there to be seen. He was joined on the Hill by former rival Kenny Roberts.
