Video: 2024 Richmond & Gordon Trophies full race | Goodwood Revival

Sunday morning at the 2024 Revival threatened to be a complete washout as the rain absolutely lashed down on the Goodwood Motor Circuit, but the weather mercifully eased to allow the early Formula 1 machines of the Richmond & Gordon Trophies to get the day’s racing action underway.

It’s a remarkable contest between front and rear-engined F1 cars that raced against each other in the late 1950s and early ‘60s, and the contest began with a thoroughly entertaining battle for the lead between Will Nuthall in his Cooper T53 lowline and Andy Willis in his BRM P48.

Both drivers were on a constant hunt for grip, testing various lines to outfox each other through entry, apex and exit. Nuthall got the better of his rival with an audacious run around the outside of Madgwick to build a gap ahead of Willis as John Spiers in his front-engined Maserati 250F began to build some momentum in improving conditions.

Battles continued throughout the field as slimline Lotuses and Coopers duelled with imposing Connaughts and Maseratis, and Spiers was left with a lot of work to do after he was clipped by Willis in the Chicane and dropped to seventh.

With ten minutes to go he embarked on a spirited recovery drive to try and reclaim a podium spot, but nobody could catch Nuthall, who put on an accomplished display of how to drive one of these glorious cars.
