One of the many highlights of this year’s Festival of Speed was the appearance of the Porsche 919 Hybrid which had won an historical victory at Le Mans just a week earlier.
Just one of the historically relevant aspects of the Porsche‘s victory was that one of its pilots – Nico Hulkenberg – is a current Grand Prix driver. The last time this happened was back in 1991 with Bertrand Gachot and Johnny Herbert in the Mazda 787B, which was of course also at FoS and was also given a swift trundle up the hill by none other than Valentino Rossi.
What we have here appears to be footage from a night qualifying session (probably Thursday’s) at this year’s event, with Hulkenberg chasing an Audi R18 e-tron quattro and frankly it’s stunning stuff. Out of every corner the Porsche’s battery-powered hybrid system can be heard mucking-in with acceleration duties, after which it shuts down at higher speeds and then chimes in again under braking.
Add to this remarkable aural spectacle the pursuit of the Audi (the Porsche/Audi rivalry doesn’t need to be explained, right?) as the pair weave through LMP2 and LMGTE cars as the setting sun fills the evening sky with a veritable colour chart of gorgeous hues and you’ll understand why the GRR office watched this though a couple of times before we set about sharing it.
Now that you’re likely either home or on your way there, we’d thoroughly recommend that you partake of Mr Hulkenberg and the Porsche 919 Hybrid in full pursuit mode.
