Unveiled amid the automotive extravagance that is the SEMA custom and performance car show in Las Vegas, the Ford Mustang GT4 comes with the promise of being eligible for any GT4 race series in the world. It is due to take to the tracks on both sides of the pond from 2017.
The newest pony car aims to offer privateer racers an “affordable” package in the professional/amateur GT4 series. The car is based on the Shelby GT350R-C which won its IMSA class in its first year of competition in 2016, though Ford insists it is mostly a new car.
Power comes from a 5.2-litre V8 with Holinger paddle-shift transmission, suspension is by Multimatic Motorsports, 8x11 Forgeline wheels with racing slicks are fitted and there’s a full roll cage. The aero package includes new rear wing, aggressive splitter, additional bonnet venting and a new rear diffuser.

In Europe Ford fans will be able to cheer on the Mustang GT4 as it battles Aston Martin Vantages, Porsche Caymans, BMW M3s, Camaros and Maseratis in the popular series.
Will it be able to emulate the success of big brother Ford GT, which won the GTE Pro class at Le Mans this year on the 50th anniversary of the blue oval’s famous GT40 win? We don’t know that but we do know it will be great to have a pony car mixing it with Europe’s best on the tracks next year.
