The countdown is under way to the unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show of McLaren’s successor to the 650S, first of Woking’s all-new second-generation Super Series models and a car with it all to do against the likes of the Ferrari 488.

McLaren continues teasing 650S successor

We will have to wait until March 7th for the whole story but meanwhile the information drip-feed continues. We have already seen the new carbon tub, dubbed Monocage II, and now Woking’s whetting our appetites with details of the aerodynamics.
So what’s new? At the rear of the new car (shown in the picture) is a new full-width active rear wing that rises up and changes its angle as required, offering air brake functionality to help keep the car balanced when braking from high speed.
McLaren says the new aero package, which is expected to dominate the very different new look of the car, increases downforce by 50 per cent over the 650S, while also improving engine cooling by 15 per cent. Overall the new car is said to be twice as aerodynamically efficient as its predecessor.

Central to how this is achieved is what product development chief Mark Vinnels calls “a unique new design of dihedral door” which incorporates twin cooling ducts, one of which feeds air to the P1-style diffuser. It’s thought the doors open high into the roof section in the manner of the F1.
Vinnels adds: “The second-generation McLaren Super Series will be as aerodynamically impressive as it is visually beautiful.”
Meanwhile, the guessing game over what the number of the beast will be – and therefore how may horses it will have – goes on…
