It happened. We got four unbelievable summer days, back-to-back with hardly a cloud in the sky at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard. Sunday was an absolute roaster with the sun high in the sky as drivers turned the wick up accordingly on the hill climb.

Where to start…? How about Kenny Brack taking a fabulous Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupé worth a cool £25 million up the Goodwood hill. The man has ice in his veins judging by the way he fully committed to showing everyone these cars are for driving, not for moth-balling.
The mad Terry Grant received one of the biggest cheers of the day when he teased his Range Rover Sport SVR all the way up the hill successfully, breaking the record time for the two-wheeled run, clocking a bum-clenching 2.25. Early in the day the determined Grant got himself in a bit of bother as he clipped the flint wall and came to rest on the hay bales opposite, so big respect for getting it done on the second time of asking.

One of the prettiest sights of the entire weekend must be given to Nick Mason’s Ferrari 250 GTO as it went up the hill leaving everyone open-mouthed and weak at the knees. Each time this car made its way from the paddock to the holding area, it genuinely stopped everyone nearby in their tracks. A stunning, stunning car, and what a day to take it for as Sunday drive.
After another memorable celebration of Porsche’s 70th birthday in front of the resplendent and sun-soaked Goodwood House, the Festival of Speed took a moment to celebrate the achievements of Jenson Button, as the Duke of Richmond thanked him for his loyal support of the Festival for 17 consecutive years.
Rounding off the day was the Sunday Shootout, with the whole site wondering if the all-conquering Volkswagen ID R would make good on Saturday’s form and take the Goodwood hill climb victory. Some even believed Nick Heidfeld’s record was under threat, but after a massive moment during practice earlier in the day, Romain Dumas only managed a history-making win behind the wheel of an electric car.
