The Forest Rally Stage, situated at the top of the Goodwood hillclimb, is well worth making the trek to – or, to make it easier, a ride in a tractor trailer shuttle. The rally cars are divided into four classes the year. ‘The birth of stage rallying’ features such classics at Lotus Cortinas, an Austin-Healey 3000 and a Saab 96. The ‘Legendary Group B’ category speaks for itself – Audi Quattros, Ford RS200s, Metro 6R4s… the rallying era that many consider the most exciting is well represented.
‘Giants of modern rallying’ includes the likes of the Ford Sierra Cosworth and Subaru Impreza, while ‘Contemporary rally cars’ features the Citroën DS3 R5 and Toyota GT86 amongst others. Cars from all classes are kicking up plenty of dust on the stage – but that’s not what this gallery is about. Instead, we dispatched photographer Tom Shaxson to soak up the atmosphere in the paddock.
