The atmosphere in the First Glance paddock was absolutely electric as the wraps officially came off the all-new Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC+. In a brilliant twist of theatre that perfectly bridges the present and future of motorsport, it was none other than rising Formula 1 star Kimi Antonelli who stepped onto the stage to unveil this AMG pocket rocket.

Fresh from a heartbreaking race at the British Grand Prix, where the Mercedes driver’s potential win evaporated, the young Italian phenomenon introduced a vehicle that doesn’t just update the compact performance segment but redefines it for the electric era. For the enthusiasts gathered, witnessing this next-generation powerhouse alongside the teenage superstar Antonelli was a jaw-dropping moment, a look ahead at what’s coming next from Affalterbach.

Beneath the sleek, aggressive four-door silhouette sits a technological masterclass. There are three axial flux electric motors, one tightly packaged in the front axle and two at the rear. Together, this innovative trio mobilises a massive peak output of 680PS (500kW) and 1,759Nm of torque.

As a result, the CLA 45 4MATIC+, to give it its full name, advances into supercar territory by rocketing from a standstill to 62mph in a staggering 2.7 seconds. Admittedly, that’s with a USA-style one-foot rollout, where the initial wheel movement isn’t timed, but even without this the car manages 0-62mph in 3.0 seconds exactly. It’ll then go on to a top-speed of 155mph, or 167 with an optional ‘AMG Dynamic Plus Package’.

How is the outrageous performance possible? Because the car utilises a flat, sandwich-like disc configuration in each motor, which aligns the electromagnetic flux parallel to the axles (try saying that in a hurry), and in turn allows these ultra-slim motors to unlock an unprecedented power density. It’s the very same cutting-edge tech that made its production debut in the AMG GT four-door coupe, now weaponised inside a compact, somewhat everyday chassis.

There’s a 94kWh lithium-ion battery, which is good for a range of 416 miles in the saloon or 398 miles in the Shooting Brake model. That’s right, this ultra-fast family weapon is available with a huge boot, too. The 800 volt battery architecture also contributes to the performance and efficiency, with shorter charging times and the ability to deliver peak power for longer, with fewer internal energy losses, too. As a result, DC charging at 330kW will get you a 10-80% charge in only 22 minutes.

Crucially, AMG hasn't forgotten the emotional connection that has historically defined the brand. At the touch of a button, the "AMGFORCE S+" driving mode delivers a synthesised high-revving four-cylinder engine sound, complete with simulated, physical traction interruptions as you move up through the gears. It's fair to say Antonelli has officially ushered in a new dawn of AMG performance.
