Romain Dumas returns to Festival of Speed to defend Timed Shoot-Out title

Romain Dumas has been crowned King of the Hill at Pikes Peak no fewer than five times, most recently coming earlier this year. For his most recent win, Dumas was at the wheel of Ford’s latest specialist EV for the job, the Super Mustang Mach-E.

Dumas’ skills clearly transfer from the 12.42-mile Colorado ascent to the 1.16-mile Goodwood Hill as he’s here at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard to try to add to his tally of four previous Timed Shoot-Out wins. If he achieves it on Sunday afternoon, it will be his third consecutive victory at the wheel here of an electric Ford. In 2018 and 2019, he set the fastest times at the wheel of the Nürburgring-optimised Volkswagen ID.R.

The Super Mustang Mach-E follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, the SuperVan 4.2 and F-150 Lightning SuperTruck, both of which have scored victories in the Timed Shoot-Out.

Ford has once again worked with Shard to create a machine dedicated dominating at Pikes Peak, and the Mustang is lighter and more agile than the SuperTruck that came before. It’s also a whole lot more wieldy looking, its reshaped silhouette appearing more coupé than SUV.

Work on the motor and battery package has dropped out 118kg compared to the SuperTruck, while 3,130kg of downforce pushes the car into the surface at 150mph. And it gets to 150mph pretty rapidly thanks to a three-motor set up that produces 1,400PS (1,029kW).

The Mach-E’s first Pikes Peak outing was in 2025 when the course was cut short due to strong winds and the risk of flying debris in the higher altitudes of the 4,299-metre climb. Dumas won his class and finished second overall. On his return this year, he claimed outright victory on the full-length climb.

The two-time Le Mans winner is looking on good form, then, for this year’s Timed Shoot-Out at the Festival of Speed. Can he make it three victories in a row for fast Fords on Sunday?
