What race at the Revival features a more varied grid of competing machinery than the St Mary’s Trophy? Leave it to the saloon car class to bring machinery of all shapes, sizes, heights, lengths, widths and girths ranging from the tiniest Austin to the most gargantuan of American tanks.

Between the little A35 and the monstrous Thunderbird, Mk1/2 Jags, A40s, Alfas, a magnificent Jag Mk7, a diddy BMW 700 and an equally diminutive Nash Metropolitan filled the ranks along with much more. It’s the varying abilities and areas of expertise that each car brings to the party that makes the St Mary’s such a breathtaking race.
While the nippier stuff gnashes at the heels of leviathans in the twisties before they hammer off down the straights. The smaller machinery glides over Goodwood’s crests and squats into its compressions, while the monsters slide and roll as power does battle with weight and grip. Little v large in the St Mary’s – it doesn’t get much better for proper interesting racing.
