Celebrating the life and legacy of Jack Brabham at the Goodwood Revival

Though many would consider his crowning achievements to be his three Formula 1 World Championships, the third of which was uniquely accomplished with a car bearing his own name, there’s so much more to the Brabham story than that; Sir Jack Brabham’s story is an unlikely tale of success against the odds. While he became an F1 Champion and secured 14 Grand Prix victories, he built cars, teams and a Brabham brand that’s still remembered and recognised today.

Out on the Motor Circuit for our Jack Brabham Parade were some of the cars he owned and raced, as well as cars that carried the Brabham name and brought considerable success for others. There was the Cooper Climax T51 that Brabham took to his first F1 Championship in 1959, followed by the T53 that secured him another title in 1961.

But there were numerous other vehicles on show that carried the Brabham name, machines like the 1970 Brabham BT33 F1 car, the car in which Sir Jack took his final F1 win. On top of that were vehicles that Sir Jack piloted in other series and events, such as a 1967 Lola-Chevrolet T70 MkIII and a 1957 Tojeiro-Jaguar. 

As former Brabham driver and five-time F1 race winner John Watson said just as the cars headed out for tribute, Brabham was a “remarkable man”, who left Australia not knowing whether his leap of faith would bring the rewards he was dreaming of. “Jack made a career and a great business as well,” Watson said.

Testament to that, 71 years after Brabham left Australia and 100 years after he was born, the world of motorsport is still in awe of his achievements. That’s the incredible legacy of the bold, brilliant and blindingly fast Sir Jack Brabham.
