Previous winners of the Lavant Cup

That first running was hugely memorable for a battle between Sir Stirling Moss at the wheel of an Aston Martin DBR1, and Martin Brundle in a Jaguar D-Type. A remarkable showcase of stunning 1950s sportscars, Peter Hardman's victory at the wheel of a Ferrari 246S Dino ensured the Lavant Cup would remain a crowd favourite whenever it returned to the schedule.

Hardman followed that up with two further victories in 1999 and 2000 at the wheel of a DBR1, and it would be almost a decade until the Lavant Cup returned in 2009.

The fourth Lavant Cup of the Revival era was the only occasion to date that it was run as a two-driver race, and it was won by Nicky Leventis and Bobby Verdon-Roe aboard a Ferrari 246S Dino amid a field of fellow 1950s sportscars. Verdon-Roe’s driving style was not only swift but also spectacular, the Dino often sideways as it navigated the Motor Circuit on its way to victory.

It returned again in 2014, appearing on the schedule for the first time as a single-make race as Gary Pearson led home a field of Jaguar D-Types. A year later, James Cottingham’s Ferrari 500TRC was victorious amid a field of 1950s sportscars from Maranello, before Malcolm Harris was victorious in 2016 at the wheel of a Cooper T25.

The 2020 running during SpeedWeek was another single-make affair, this time for Maseratis, and it was Marino Franchitti who took victory with a Maserati Tipo 61 ‘Birdcage’.

Friend of Goodwood and charismatic broadcaster Ed Foster claimed a dramatic and emotional victory in the all- MGB race of 2022, before Rob Hall won the most recent edition of the Lavant Cup in 2023 — another all-Ferrari race, this time for GT cars — with a Ferrari 250 LM.
