Race Report: Fordwater Trophy – Revival 2019

Saturday’s racecard got underway in frantic fashion with the Fordwater Trophy for road-going sports and GT cars built between 1960 and 1966. Porsches, TVRs, MGs and Lotuses were among the front-runners for the race, but pole position belonged to the Triumph TR4 of Josh Files.

Files was delayed by an excursion over the grass early in the race as he attempted to hold off the rampant little Mini Marcos of Nick Swift, who then set about harrying the Lotus Elan of Robert Barrie in a truly spectacular battle for the lead. Barrie’s larger twin-cam engine gave it an advantage on the straights, while Mini racing guru Swift used every ounce of gallantry to catch up in the corners.

After 16 laps of intense racing, with the drivers exchanging a cheery wave or two as they passed one another, Barrie was able to stretch a half-second advantage on the run to the flag. Behind them, Josh Files recovered from his earlier indiscretion to claim third place.
