This is a fixture that pays homage to the Glover Trophy that was contested in Goodwood’s heyday. Leading the field of high-revving, 1.5-litre cars that originally competed between 1961 and 1965 was pole-sitter Lukas Halusa in his Brabham-Climax BT7, flanked by Stuart Hall piloting a Lotus-Climax 21 and Philipp Buhofer in a BRM P261.
When the flag dropped, the trio launched in unison and charged three-abreast into a nail-biting run through Madgwick, with Hall coming out on top to take the immediate lead. Behind him, Halusa staged a spectacular charge, storming past Buhofer, dropping wheels onto the grass and threading through the chicane to complete a frantic opening lap.
Not to content to stop there, Halusa then launched a bold retaliatory strike on Hall. He attempted a breathtaking move around the outside, but a slide onto the grass compromised his momentum and allowed Ben Mitchell to brilliantly capitalise and snatch second place in his Cooper-Climax T56.
With the top five runners separated by under five seconds, Halusa and Mitchell locked horns in a mesmerising, wheel-to-wheel duel, trading places at virtually every corner. Adding to the drama that was unfolding across the grid, the limit-pushing pace triggered spins further down the order from Christian Lange in a Lotus-Climax 24 and Buhofer, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
It wasn’t long before Halusa launched another assault to reclaim the top spot from Hall. The pair charged side-by-side down the Lavant Straight and into Woodcote, with Halusa's Brabham-Climax BT7 brilliantly clinching the lead as they approached the chicane. However, his time at the front lasted only moments; a clipped wheel on the grass sent the Brabham sliding wide, dropping him to third and opening the door for Joe Colasacco in the screaming flat-12 Ferrari 1512.
A moment came for us to catch our breath when the safety car was deployed to handle the trackside retirement of John Romano's Brabham-Climax BT11, and when the green flag was waved with only minutes remaining, the gloves came off for a spectacular shoot-out between Colasacco and Hall. Jostling fiercely for the win, the two drivers utilised every inch of tarmac, and in a last-gasp bid for victory on the final lap, Halusa threw caution to the wind with a daring overtake. Sadly though, he slid off-track and into retirement, cruelly losing a hard-fought podium spot at the final hurdle.
After what was undoubtedly one of the most action-packed races of the weekend, the podium was finalised. Colasacco crossed the line to take a spectacular victory in the Ferrari 1512, followed closely by Hall in second. Meanwhile Nick Fennell inherited third place in his Lotus-Climax 25 in a race that proved to be a breathtaking showcase of Formula 1's golden era.
