Pole position belonged to Richard Wilson in his striking Maserati 250S, though he was surrounded by the Ferraris of Joe Macari, James Cottingham and Frank Stippler. When the flag dropped, the Maserati 250S immediately showed its pace as the trident-badged machine held its advantage. Behind it, Stippler’s Ferrari 250 MM made a spectacular opening move, slicing down the inside into Madgwick, while Macari dropped back to fourth in his Ferrari 250 TR.
Forced onto the defensive, Wilson tried to establish a comfortable cushion at the front, but Cottingham relentlessly hunted the inside line in his Ferrari 500 TRC. Further back, heartbreak struck for Alexander van der Lof as his Ferrari 250 Monza failed to complete even a single lap of this beautiful race. Out front, a fired-up Stippler put on a masterclass as he reeled in Cottingham’s 500 TRC and compressed the top three to within just three seconds of each other.
With every passing lap, Stippler hounded the back of Cottingham's Ferrari, matching his pace and closing the gap — all while Wilson used the squabble behind him to power the lone Maserati further ahead.
With just over five minutes left on the clock, podium contender Macari was forced to limp into the pits in his Ferrari 250 TR. Moments later, Stippler ran wide onto the grass but brilliantly wrestled his 250 MM back onto the asphalt. The mechanical attrition continued as seven-time NASCAR Champion Jimmie Johnson became the next high-profile retirement, piloting his Ferrari 250 TR into the pit lane. With multiple Ferraris now out of contention, it seemed the historic battle of attrition was swinging decisively in one direction.
As the final laps ticked down and Wilson continued to hold a commanding lead in the Maserati 250S, a spectacular duel raged behind between the Cottingham and Stippler. In a desperate bid for second on the final lap, Stippler launched one last overtake but clipped the grass, a mistake which sent his Ferrari 250 MM airborne, compressing the suspension to its absolute limits in what was certainly one of the wildest moments of the weekend. Miraculously, Stippler caught the car and kept it on track, but the momentary sideways slide allowed Cottingham to capitalise and claim a hard-fought second place.
Wilson's victory in the Maserati 250S provided a fairytale ending to this Battle of Modena, at an event where we celebrated Maserati and its motorsport heritage. A thoroughly well-earned triumph for the Trident and for Wilson, who took his first win in the Lavant Cup.
