Hurtling into Madgwick, the action turned chaotic. Frank Stippler, piloting the nimble Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA, went wheel-to-wheel with Formula 1 Champion Jenson Button in the Ford-Lotus Cortina Mk1. The battle was fierce, forcing Button off the tarmac and into a desperate recovery drive. Seizing on the drama, king of the Goodwood Hill Romain Dumas used the slipstream to snatch back the lead he had lost off the line. All of this, and the cars hadn't even completed their opening lap.
As the race settled into a rhythm, Button began slicing back through the field. He rubbed shoulders with touring car titans Alex Buncombe, Tom Chilton and Matt Neal, each wrestling their heavy saloons through the Motor Circuit’s high-speed sweeps. Up front, a tactical war erupted. Dumas anchored his massive, V8-powered Ford Galaxie 500 against the razor-sharp cornering of Stippler’s Alfa Romeo and the hard-charging Ford-Lotus Cortina of Tom Ingram.
Renowned as the most boisterous grid of the weekend, the St. Mary’s Trophy delivered drama at every apex. Behind the leaders, identical Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTAs driven by Rob Huff and Andrew Jordan were locked in a mesmerizing duel — so closely matched they looked like shadows of one another.
Further back, a ferocious trio of mighty Minis stole the show. Greg Murphy, piloting a Morris Mini Cooper S, drove on the limit to fend off the relentless attacks of Patrick Watts in the Austin Mini Cooper S and Tony Jardine in a matching Morris. Sparing not an inch of tarmac, this battle held the crowd completely spellbound, charging three-abreast into Madgwick and towards the apex in true touring car fashion.
With just ten minutes left on the clock, Gordon Shedden pushed his Ford-Lotus Cortina Mk1 to the limit in a fierce duel with Rob Huff’s Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA, who caught the grass on entry. The rear of the Cortina snapped into a massive oversteer slide, costing Shedden vital momentum and dropping him down the order.
Out front, Romain Dumas looked unstoppable, carving his Galaxie through backmarkers while continuing to rack up the fastest sector times. Yet despite his outright track domination, the gap at the front began to shrink. Frank Stippler mounted a late charge in his Alfa, clawing his way back to within two seconds of the leader.
The final few laps were as tense as they come, filled with desperate late lunges and defensive masterclasses. Ultimately, Dumas relied on his prestigious racing repertoire and the raw V8 power of the Galaxie to weather the storm, crossing the line to clinch a spectacular, hard-earned victory in Part 1 of the St. Mary’s Trophy.
