Video: Can Jacques Villeneuve tame the Hairy Canary?

Unlike the car, which has become part of Revival furniture, Villeneuve was making his Goodwood debut, having only tackled the circuit in the simulator before the event.

This film follows the Cobra’s journey over the event — from the early practice sessions to the RAC TT Celebration itself — on a weekend that threw up just about every kind of weather Goodwood has to offer.

We begin with Nick Sleep, who co-owns the car with Villeneuve, as he talks us through the Cobra’s unique paint (or should that be no-paint) finish, the result of a shunt at Brands Hatch that the team never quite had time to repair.

Then it’s over to the man himself. Villeneuve’s family has owned several classic muscle cars, and his enthusiasm for historic racing is written all over his face as he tells us why he’s loved his inaugural appearance on track at the Revival. 

Race weekends being what they are, his first practice didn’t go entirely to plan. There was even a question of whether he’d fit in the car at all, Sleep being of rather loftier dimensions. Thankfully, a few well-placed bits of foam padding did the trick, and with seating (almost) sorted, Villeneuve set about learning the circuit’s charms — its speed, double apexes and flat-out sweeps — while the Cobra supplied, as you’d expect, armfuls of oversteer to keep things lively.

If practice was entertaining, a wet qualifying session proved just how eager the Cobra can be to bite. But Goodwood saved the real drama for the race: it started dry, ended very wet, and threw in a red flag for good measure.
