Enthusiasts can argue all the livelong day about what was the first hot hatch. Indeed, the concept was explored by several manufacturers at about the same time. Nevertheless, none have been more consistent and genre-defining in their offering than Volkswagen with the Golf GTi, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
