Experience tomorrow’s world in FOS Future Lab

14th July 2024

It’s not all about cars at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard you know. Actually, one of the more interesting features across the whole event does not showcase a single car, at least in the traditional sense. FOS Future Lab presented by Randox is Goodwood’s window to the future, an exhibition of the technology of tomorrow, but demonstrated in front of your eyes today.

We went for a little walk around to take a closer look at what’s on show, and you don’t have to get very close before you spot the enormous eVTOL jet parked outside. It looks like something out of Star Wars, but developer Lilium has already begun the process of making these available for purchase. The UK’s largest helicopter and private jet operator eVolare has already agreed to purchase four of these jets. It difficult to imagine seeing one of these in the skies above London, a truly futuristic sight.

Wander inside and you’re met with all manner of interesting sights. You’ll be greeted by Performit Live’s hippo character, a demonstration of its live motion capture technology, and plenty of other interactive experiences and opportunities.

In one corner, Sheffield Robotics have brought some cute little critters to play. Among other projects, this team has a major focus on STEM and the integration of robotics into education. We saw several of their robotic MiRo-E puppies scampering around Future Lab, which have been developed specifically as a teaching aid. In another corner, Shadow Robot’s robotic hands are showing remarkable dexterity by doing tricks with plastic cups.

And amid all of this, is a plethora of autonomous technology. The likes of Windracers’ self-flying aircraft is on display outside Future Lab, as is the Dronamics cargo drone. There’s even an opportunity to take a look at the future of Royal Mail.

FOS Future Lab continues to evolve year on year, and the 2024 exhibition is one of the most varied and tactile yet, with plenty of mind-boggling tech to get your hands on and experience through the world of VR. It’s definitely worth venturing over to take in all of the sights.
