When a reporter once asked Bruce McLaren about his ultimate ambition beyond the racetrack, his answer was beautifully simple: “A civilised version of one of our racing cars.” Decades later, that singular dream has found its ultimate realisation through the master craftspeople at McLaren Special Operations (MSO).
The genesis of this vision was the legendary M6GT — the very first expression of Bruce’s road car audacity. It was an apex predator tamed just enough for tarmac, a machine unlike anything the automotive world had ever seen.

McLaren was so deeply enamoured with the vehicle that he envisioned a production run of 50 road-going examples to challenge Europe's elite. Tragically, fate intervened and the project never moved past the solitary prototype stage, and the car registered as 'OBH 500H' remained a mythical 'what-if'. Until now.
The master engineers at MSO have brought that unfinished legacy triumphantly back to life, and will debut their M6GT restoration at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard.
This monumental project was never about mere imitation; it was an exercise in capturing the pure, unadulterated soul of the original. To guarantee absolute historical authenticity, the M6GT: Restored by MSO (to give it its full name) breathes through a period-correct small-block V8 engine and gearbox, complete with the iconic ‘camel hump’ cylinder heads matching the original 1960s blueprint.
The very spine is forged from a period-built M6A racer chassis, meticulously verified against historic McLaren reference vehicles to ensure it remains completely faithful to its founder's original vision.
Over the course of a painstaking 3,000-hour build process, history truly came alive in the workshop. MSO engineers were joined by veterans of McLaren’s golden era — the original mechanics and designers who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Bruce himself. In a wonderful nod to the triumphs of historic British motorsport ingenuity, these legends recounted stories of drawing the original car's rear upright around a banana in the engineering tearoom.
What is truly remarkable about this resurrected machine is how effortlessly its DNA mirrors McLaren’s most recent hypercars. It serves as a breathtaking visual reminder that the ghost of Bruce McLaren’s genius still guides the company's bleeding-edge design language to this very day.
At this year’s Festival of Speed, visitors can experience a living lineage stretching from Bruce’s earliest competitive experiments to modern aerodynamic masterpieces. McLaren’s immersive showcase spans a breathtaking array of icons, including the thundering M8A, the historic Austin 7 Ulster, the legendary McLaren F1 GTR and the groundbreaking W1 hypercar, alongside the contemporary brilliance of the Artura, 750S, and Artura Spider.
Looking squarely into the future, the event also plays host to the monumental public debut of the MCL-HY. This is McLaren Racing’s radical new engineering weapon destined for the 2027 Le Mans 24 Hours and World Endurance Championship. Alongside it will be the track-only MCL-HY GTR, an ultra-exclusive customer track car designed to rewrite the rules of performance.
Rounding out this high-octane celebration of speed is a true hero's homecoming, as McLaren’s very own reigning Formula 1 World Champion, Lando Norris, will light up the crowds with a Balcony Moment in celebration of his achievement last year, while a selection of the team’s heritage F1 machines will take to the Hill.
From the drawing boards of the 1960s to the podiums of tomorrow, the spirit of Bruce McLaren burns brighter than ever before. The McLaren House promises the chance to see the legacy for yourself, and discover exactly what happens when a racing dream refuses to die.
