If you’re looking for variety, the St. Mary’s Trophy presented by Motul is the race to see. You’ve got eight-, six- and four-cylinder engines, some cars have rear-wheel-drive while others are front driven, and there are two-door coupes and four-door saloons. Who’s going to win? You really never know.

A 25-minute dash that sees what are effectively pre-1966 touring cars engage in close-quarters battle, the field is always relatively closely packed. Cars like the Ford Zodiac and Thunderbird have more grunt on the straights, while Austin A40s and Minis hold their advantage through the corners. Then there are those that slot somewhere in between, the likes of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Ti and the Jaguar Mk1.

The first part of the St. Mary’s Trophy saw touring car legend Steve Soper start from pole in a Ford Fairlane alongside a pair of British Touring Car champions, Gordon Shedden in Jaguar Mk1 and Andrew Jordan in an Austin A40.

Behind them were a number of other drivers who have one or two trophies on the shelves at home, including nine-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Tom Kristensen, 2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button, seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, and IndyCar champions Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan. The list goes on and on, and the resulting action on track was certainly worthy of their credentials.

There were several of memorable individual performances from the likes of Kristensen and Kanaan, and in the end, the race victory was decided in the final corner of the race. It was a close run thing throughout the field, and the gap between third and fourth place was just 0.12 seconds.
