A cloudy, damp atmosphere over the South Downs provided a dramatic backdrop to the action ahead. The front row featured a pair of past victors: pole-sitter Stuart Roach aboard his self-restored Alexis-Ford Mk3, and Andrew Hibberd in third piloting a Lotus-Ford 20. Sandwiched between them in second was Nathan Metcalfe, also in a Lotus-Ford 20.
The trio enjoyed a swift getaway off the line once the flag dropped, but chaos unfolded behind them as the Lotus-Ford 18 of Clinton McCarthy lunged forward and was forced to veer sharply to the left to avoid a collision, while other cars barely managed to move at all.
Despite getting a strong launch, Metcalfe couldn't usurp Roach, who held onto the lead in the opening stages. Further back a fierce battle unfolded as the pack navigated the heavy track spray. With grip at an absolute premium, the treacherous conditions quickly took their toll; cars began spinning across both the asphalt and the grass, leaving James Hicks stranded and stationary in his Caravelle Mk3.
Up front, Roach had already bolted into the distance with a whopping lead of over eight seconds. He hammered out purple sectors lap after lap as his Alexis-Ford Mk3 to check out from a field that remained locked in a low-grip stalemate. A mere three-tenths of a second separated the battle for tenth between Richard Bishop-Miller's Caravelle-Ford Mk2 and McCarthy’s Lotus-Ford 18.
Just as McCarthy wrestled the position away from the Caravelle, drama struck near the front. Metcalfe suffered a wild spin, dropping him down to eighth before he could reacquaint himself with the tarmac. His mistake cleared the way for a straight duel between Roach and Hibberd to decide the winner.
As he began slicing through backmarkers and back-grid traffic, Roach masterfully weaved his way forward. He flexed his racing pedigree with some incredibly aggressive overtakes, occasionally dipping his wheels onto the grass in the heat of wheel-to-wheel combat. He wasn’t the only one finding the limits of the greasy track, Martin Bullock also ran wide in his Wren-Cosworth Ford FJ1, kicking up a spectacular cloud of turf.
Roach's relentless pace pushed the gap over second place past the 20-second mark, and by the time the chequered flag waved, his masterclass was complete. He crossed the line over a minute ahead of runner-up Hibberd and the R.A.M Formula JR of Joe Colasacco. It was a dominant display from Roach and his beautifully prepared Alexis-Ford, cementing a fourth victory in the Chichester Cup for this unstoppable pairing.
