Kanaan and Franchitti’s years together at Andretti Green Racing (2003–2007) cemented their legend. Kanaan won the 2004 crown, while Franchitti claimed the dramatic 2007 Championship narrowly beating Dixon in a tight finale. Soon after, Franchitti joined Dixon at Chip Ganassi Racing, forming one of IndyCar’s most dominant pairings. Between them, they won four Championships in five seasons.
It all boded well for a successful outing in Part 1 of the St. Mary’s Trophy, which was in the running to be the race of the entire weekend.
The IndyCar contingent didn’t have things entirely their own way, however. Jimmie Johnson, whose seven NASCAR titles were earned aboard burly, high-powered stock cars, may be the most naturally suited to coax speed from the tin-tops that define the St. Mary’s Trophy. Since making his IndyCar debut with Ganassi in 2021, he’s learned from Dixon and Kanaan, who helped him transition from NASCAR’s controlled aggression to the precision of open-wheel racing.
In this video, these racing legends share tales of their past endeavours before telling us what draws some of the best drivers in the world to the Revival. But how do the friends fare when the chat stops and the racing starts?
