It’s been an emotional year for Porsche motorsport fans. Yet another win at Le Mans against steep competition that was followed not too long afterwards by none other than the manufacturer’s withdrawal from LMP1 altogether.
Much-maligned as LMP1 has been in recent years for its lack of relatability and towering expense, by manufacturers, organisers and fans alike, it’s sad to see a titan of the genre bow out. So it makes for emotional viewing seeing the 919 out running with the car in which Porsche aces are expected to cut their teeth. The first time it takes to Brands with the new GT3 Cup car is also the last time it runs on track as a contemporary top-level endurance racer. We’ll miss it but we can be sure they’ll be back…
