Drag racing, along with drifting, is one of the last great garagista motorsports. These are vehicles of all shapes, sizes and ages – on two wheels, four and more – designed, engineered and built by individuals. Short of our own Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, there aren’t many places where you’ll see quite such a variety of vehicles, than that long shiny strip of tarmac at Santa Pod and venues like it.
Video: Dragster madness at Santa Pod
From turbocharged drag bikes and fully prepped drag go-karts, to Audis and BMWs fresh from being run in, and everything in between, there’s something for everyone. Even the unlikeliest of machines makes an appearance, a supercharged Jaguar XJ limousine, making quite the V8 racket and showing an all-wheel-drive Audi TT which way is fast. There’s a selection of classics bred beyond the wildest dreams of their original creators, for unimpeded speed on the strip. There’s a Vauxhall Chevette, Ford Escort and a whole host of other hot rods and old muscle cars with fat drag radials and monster hood bulges. As a bit of escapism for a Monday tea break, this video is an automotive chocolate box like few others.
