Of all the epic Sport Auto laps of the Nürburgring we expected to see this year – Valkyrie and AMG One among them – the Porsche 911 Dakar was not near the top of the list. Though most 911s can and do take the Nordschleife in their stride, the Dakar is about as suited to tackling the Green Hell as a Panda 4x4 is to the Goodwood Hill. And yet, because it’s a Dakar, this indeed is a lap with a difference, given it spends more time off the black stuff, than on.

With the kinds of capabilities the Dakar has over say, a GT3 RS, you don’t have to sweat your lines, what kerbs to rub and what apexes to cut quite so much. The Dakar can afford to actually leap the track’s usual confines and take a shortcut through the forest. It can jump the kind of sausage kerbs that’d leave an RS with a limp. In ways – weird and wonderful though they are – it’s entirely suited to laps around the ‘Ring, if not confined by conventional rules…
It’s certainly interesting to see though, just how fun the Dakar is when it is ‘behaving’ by staying on the prescribed route. The way it jumps, dives and heaves, moving around on its bobbly tyres, just makes it look like a total riot.
