NASCAR – it’s all just going round in circles, right? Wrong – well, right, but it’s actually far more complicated than it looks…
Video: This NASCAR pedal‑cam is intense
Climb aboard with Kevin Harvick at the Sonoma Raceway last summer, and take a look at the incredible footwork required to drive a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series racer, his toes dancing a deft display – brake, accelerate, brake, brake, acceleraaaaate.
Straight-cut gears and a ‘dog box’ transmission negate the need for the clutch pedal, allowing Harvick to focus his efforts on the two pedals that matter. A split screen shows his progress in the race, the 44-year-old hugging the back of the 20-odd pack ahead of him.
This four-minute-long video is a marvellous display of the complexities of racing. So next time your mates dismiss NASCAR for ‘just going around in circles’, show them this.
