On track today: Lotus on Track (19/05)

Lotus on Track has adopted an open-minded approach to who they’re letting out to play on their track day today; amongst the Lotus Elises and their derivatives, we’ve spotted a supercharged Ariel Atom, Honda Type-R powered Mini and a Westfield.

Should we admit that it was a non-Lotus that drew our attention first? Exige owner Ian Ross took advantage of the excellent weather by bringing his Sigma special to the day. It’s badged as an Aston Martin having been built by Aston engineer Paul Jackman in the 1950s.

The 2-litre, four-cylinder sidevalve Atom engine is said to have come from the DB1 that finished in 11th place at the 1949 Le Mans 24-hour. Other Aston parts have been used, but it also employs a BMW 326 chassis and a Triumph Gloria rear axle.

The car spent many years in a German museum before being sold to someone who believed he was buying a DBR1. It then passed to Ian, whose three-year restoration was complete just before Christmas last year, and today is its first outing on track. He’s hoping to one day race it at the Goodwood Revival.
