We think LMP3 is one of the more underrated classes in motorsport. It’s a competitive series, but it lacks the glitz and glamour of the more premier LMP1 or Formula 1. However, we’d like to argue that these cars are some of the best sounding racers on the planet.
Just take a few minutes to soak in the brutal roar of this Ginetta G61-LT-P3. While the likes of F1 and LMP1 are pressing forward with efficient hybrid tech – the new LMDh cars are beginning to break cover – the LMP3 class has just seen its old 5.0-litre V8s replaced by a new 5.5-litre V8. Power output is ‘only’ 455PS (335kW), but the decibels are off the scale. There aren’t too many series that make this level of noise anymore, so we shouldn’t take it for granted.
You may not have heard of most of the manufacturers, but Ginetta and Ligier (now Onroak Automotive) should ring a bell. What makes Ginetta slightly different is that they’re the only manufacturer that has opted for the rear exhaust layout instead of side exhausts. This may not sound like too much of a difference, but that small change results in the extra wallop to the ears you experience in this video. It has a slight similarity to a Lola T70… which is alright by us.
