A lot can change in four decades, and from the 1970s to 2010s, the world saw a technological revolution. And no stronger was this felt than in the ranks of Formula 1, where both safety and performance improved tenfold over that period.
Video: 40 Years of Monza F1 onboards
This video, courtesy of YouTuber TheDrifter94, has visualised that brilliantly, with an evolving compilation of F1 cars, from the 1978 Ligier JS9 Matra V12, driven by Jacques Laffite, to the 2014 Ferrari F14T V6 Turbo, piloted by Fernando Alonso, admittedly not Ferrari’s finest creation…
Along the way, it features the 1990 McLaren MP4-5B V10 of Ayrton Senna, the 2002 Ferrari F2002 V10 of Michael Schumacher and the 2010 McLaren MP4/25 Mercedes V8 of Jenson Button, among many others.
In 10 short minutes, watch from various cockpits as the car design develops and safety progresses. If you turn your sound up, too, you can enjoy four decades of engine evolution. While the top speeds may not have increased exponentially, Formula 1 is certainly a different game now than it was in the seventies.
