This weekend American sportscar racing heads to storied Floridian paving for the Sebring 12 Hour, as Porsches return to battle Cadillacs, Acuras, BMWs and, for the first time, Lamborghinis, as the Italian marque’s SC63 GTP challenger makes its IMSA debut. Sebring is a time-honoured battleground for highly sophisticated sports prototypes with history going back decades, which is why for today’s videographical motorsport meditation, we’re turning back the clock almost 60 years.
Video: Travel back in time to the 1967 Sebring 12 Hour
It’s 1967. Ford is debuting the MkIV, Porsche has brought 2.0-litre-engined 910 screamers, Chaparral has stuck this crazy thing called a ‘wing’ on his prototypes and Ferrari are for some reason absent in a factory capacity. Fighting in the smaller-engine class also is Alfa Romeo and a few Dino-engined Ferraris. We hear from incredible drivers, from a young pre-F1 championship Mario Andretti, AJ. Foyt, Bruce McLaren and more.
After a proper flat-out on-board ride with a Mustang, we get the running start to the cars as they scream out of their starting boxes to take on the rough-riding, bouncing grueling 12 hours of racing ahead.
While we won’t see anything quite like Jim Hall’s mad Chaparral on track this weekend, the sounds of the roaring V8s haven’t changed much from its Chevy small block, by comparison to the Cadillac of today. It’s the screaming sixes and V12s that we miss, but hopefully Aston Martin will have that covered next year. We’re excited to watch the racing around Sebring once again in 2024.
