Although the 24 hours of racing doesn’t start until tomorrow, last night there were practice sessions going on until about 10pm so we had the opportunity to get a taste of what’s in store. We can confirm that it’s pretty epic stuff.
The enormous grandstand here serves not only to offer seating for thousands of race fans, but it also keeps the sound of the cars hemmed-in. Consider also that most of the cars here run ‘uncorked’ as the Americans would say (meaning that they run minimal exhaust silencing, if any) and you begin to understand how the hairs on the back of your neck stand to attention when a Greenwood Corvette howls down the straight or when a Porsche 962 comes past, braking hard and igniting great dollops of unburned fuel through the exhaust with every downshift. Spectacular.
We will in due course share some on-board footage from a host of the cars competing this weekend, but for now you’ll have to make do with this gallery of gorgeous shots from our tame snappers.
Stay tuned …
