Video: Flat‑Out and Fearless ‑ Schwantz, Rainey and Doohan at Suzuka, '91

We had a bit of a Suzuka renaissance yesterday. After sharing the outstanding video of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost’s qualifying laps at the famous Honda-owned facility, we decided to stay there for a ‘Flat-Out and Fearless…’ clip, and we found a beauty …

1991 was an epic MotoGP season; part of a golden age. The last race that year was won by John Kocinski, but aside from that every other event was won by either Kevin Schwantz (Suzuki), Wayne Rainey (Yamaha), or Mick Doohan (Honda). The trio waged fearsome battle across the entire season, and although Rainey eventually prevailed, at no point did any one rider look like a shoo-in for the title.

What we’re studying today folks is the very last lap of the very first Grand Prix of that season, although judging by the way each rider is going about it you’d think that the title hinged on this final tour. It’s got the lot: three riders with very different styles on three evenly-matched bikes from three different constructors, often taking different lines, making small mistakes, out-braking each other and sometimes themselves… and all played-out without any tricks or gamesmanship – just ‘Flat-Out and Fearless: Racing on the Edge’.

There’s really not much more to add, except that we wish there could be a race for early-Nineties Grand Prix bikes at future Members’ Meetings! Hmm, now there’s an idea …
