Can-Am got very silly, very quickly, towards the end of its golden era. The McLaren M8F was closing in on 1,000 horsepower – in 1972. The following year the Porsche 917/30 would take power levels through the 1,500hp barrier!

Such ridiculous machines would not be around for long. But although it was short-lived, this glorious era of motorsport is often celebrated today with exemplary machines being wheeled out at classic motorsport events. We regularly see Can-Am cars take on the hill at FOS, as well as the Motor Circuit during Revival and Members’ Meeting. In the video above, we’re given the tour of the seminal 8.8-litre M8F before it raced at this year’s Silverstone Classic. Check those onboards, too, as the wedge shape and enormous tyres struggle to deploy 900hp around Silverstone.
