Journalist Richard Meaden had things all his own way in the Whitmore Cup, finishing a convincing 4.1 seconds ahead of second-place Mark Sumpter. His closest rival in qualifying, ex-BTCC racer Steve Soper, sadly retired from the race, robbing us of witnessing a great battle for first place. All three men were driving Lotus Cortinas.
There were plenty of close battles further back in the field, something that was always promised by the fact that this race was solely for sub-2-litre cars. That's a first for Goodwood, and gave us a grid of Minis, Lotus Cortinas, BMW 1800 TiSAs and Alfa Romeo GTAs.
