The timed shootout at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard was as closely fought as it was diverse-of-entrant. In one corner, an upstart GT, in the other a hillclimb-ripping monster, in the other a ‘90s CART veteran and opposite that, an old-school Group C brute.

When has a quartet of Goodwood Hill hopefuls hailed from more diverse backgrounds? As it stood, and much to the disappointment of Anthony Reid and his Arrinera squad, their pace wasn’t quite up to it. Nor was that of Mark Higgins in his rabid Impreza, though no less impressive in general for their two-second deficit. No, in the end, the 46s were held solely by Justin Law in the snarling old Jag, and Jeremy Smith in the boosty fuming Penske-Chevrolet. Watch as the two battle it out side-by-side up the Hill. In the end, it comes down to less than a tenth of a second, as these late-'80s and early-'90s bruisers show the new boys what real speed is at Goodwood.
