WRC giant wins Sunday Shootout in Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak
Nine-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb saw off a stern challenge from hugely-experienced German Michael Bartels to win by 1.22 seconds. Loeb had been hot favourite, not only for the win on the day, but also to challenge the long-standing record by Nick Heidfeld of 41.6 seconds, although his winning time of 44.6 seconds ultimately left him well-adrift, despite a hugely popular attacking driving style.
Bartels, who was piloting the stunning Maserati MC12 ‘Goodwood Cent 100’ came home ahead of Revival favourite Kenny Brack in a McLaren F1 GTR ‘Long-tail’, and Michelin Supercar Run winner Jann Mardenborough in a Nissan GTR-NISMO GT3. The fastest F1 car on the day was a Jordan 191-Ford driven by Didier Sirgue, and surprise of the day came from Max Papis who, incredibly, managed to be ahead of Loeb’s time at the first checkpoint in an enormous Chevrolet Impala NASCAR, although the tighter final section of the course proved too challenging for the mighty Chevy.
So that means we’re going to have to wait yet another year to see if anyone can challenge Heidfeld’s 1999 record time. Will Loeb return with an updated Peugeot, or will another challenger appear in the meantime?
