Compile a shortlist of some of the loudest and craziest endurance racers of all time. If the 1991 Mazda 787B isn’t floating around somewhere near the top, if not heading the list, then your list needs some changes.

Video: Mazda 787B – the greatest sounding engine of all time?
Being the only Japanese car ever to outright win Le Mans, the 787B has everything to shout about. The R26B four rotor engine produces a maximum output of over 900 horsepower, but is often limited to 700 for the sake of endurance.
In the video above, drink in the savagery of the 787B both from a cockpit point of view, and facing back on the clamshell as the Hillclimb falls away behind it. The driver is taking it somewhat easy on the priceless monster, but as you can hear, that engine fizzes and howls before the short-shifts. It’s chomping at the bit to clatter into the rev limiter.
What a car, and what an engine!
