Health Benefits of Cold Showers

10th February 2017

We’ve all been there; you’re the last in the queue for the shower when the tank is practically empty. Or someone decides to flush the toilet mid-shower, draining you of every last warm droplet. In these moments we often find ourselves shivering and quivering with anger; however this may actually be beneficial to our health.

  1. Increases alertness – Having cold water running down your back first thing in the morning can seem somewhat more horrifying than soothing. However, the deep breathing that naturally occurs from this shock to the body increases our levels of oxygen.

  2. Improves immunity and circulation – Cold water against our skin encourages blood to circulate to our organs, more efficiently and boosts the overall health of our heart. It can also clear blocked arteries and improve our immune system.

  3. Stimulates weight loss – Our body is made up of good and bad fats. The good fats are activated when subject to cooler temperatures, therefore baring a cold shower can actually promote the burning of calories.

  4. Speeds up muscle soreness and recovery – Unless deemed necessary, ice baths are never really at the top of anyone’s bucket list. And whilst the icy temperatures are great for fuelling muscle recovery, taking a cold shower can be just as effective.

  5. Eases stress – Our tolerance to cold water is likely to be considerably lower than that of a warm shower. However, jumping into cold water can not only increase our body’s tolerance to water, but also overall tolerance - including stress.
