Preparing for the 5 mile Hillclimb

With just over three months to go until the 5-mile Hillclimb, we've had a chat with Matt Jolly about how to train and prepare for the running event. Matt is one of our Personal Trainers at Health and Wellbeing at Goodwood, he regularly competes in marathons and is also a triathlete.

Q. How many times a week should you train leading up to the event?

A. Three times per week, it is important to find the balance of training but also having time to rest and recover.

Q. As well as running what other types of training would you recommend?

A. Strength training and yoga/Pilates, is not only beneficial for you but having a variety of training will help you stay motivated.

Q. How can you make training more enjoyable?

A. Run with a friend/group, listen to a music playlist or podcast and find different routes to explore.

Q. What would you recommend eating on the day leading up to the event?

A. Slow-releasing carbohydrates for breakfast and lunch with faster release snack two hours before

For example; porridge with nuts/seeds, tuna pasta and salad, fruit smoothie.

Q. How can you avoid injuries while training?

A. Prioritise nutrition and sleep. Progress steadily and listen to your body.

 

As part of your training why not give the May gym challenge a go, walk/ run the distance of the famous Goodwood hill climb, (1.86 km/ 1.16 miles) on gradient five.
