National Tree Week at Goodwood

The tree planting took place along the southern boundary of the South Downs National Park, between Strettington and Lavant, and supports the plans of the permissive path in this area. Once the permissive path is open to the public, local residents and visitors will be able to walk from Lavant and Halnaker. Having the trees in place will also act as a wildlife corridor, giving animals a safe passage between other woodlands.

The carefully selected trees are all native to Great Britain, ensuring seamless integration into the local environment. The diverse mix includes oak, field maple, hornbeam, birch, small leaf lime, walnut, beech, hazel, hawthorn, and conifers from Scotland. Notably, the disease-resistant elms were generously supplied by the South Downs National Park. Among the collection, include some rare species such as wild service trees and black poplar. Wild service trees play a crucial role in supporting wildlife by providing essential pollen and nectar for insects and berries for birds. Additionally, they hold the potential for timber use in the future. The black poplar is an extremely rare species in the UK, with historical usage in wooden battleships and gunpowder. Today, it has become scarce with the introduction of hybrid poplar cultivars that produce no seed and therefore no mess. All the cross breeding has meant true black poplar has become a rare sight as the older trees have died off.

Having a diverse range of tree species is important as it minimises the risk of disease spreading through single species. This approach also promotes biodiversity and supports specific wildlife needs, creating a resilient ecosystem that can withstand threats such as pests, diseases, natural disasters, and other environmental challenges.
