The medal contest began with 18 holes on The Park Course, under an overcast sky and was rounded off with a second 18, over The Downs Course on a wet and windy Friday. Firm favourite for the gross competition was 2016 Champion Carol Smith (6), with expected challengers, 2015 Champion Pam Leach (12), Diane Simpson (12) and Barbara Parker (12) all in contention.
The nett competition was all to play for after the first round as nine ladies finished within six shots of Helen Todd's nett 70 lead, including Susan Marks’ 71, Brenda Henderson’s 72 and a 73 from Sue Tant.
The gross competition, however, was being dominated by Carol Smith who made her way home with a comfortable overnight lead of seven shots over her nearest challenger, Barbara Parker but in the knowledge that day two would be an immense challenge if the weather forecast was to prove correct.
The start sheet for round two was in reverse order of round one, gross scores. The early groups on the tee, who had had a difficult first round, would have to endure the morning monsoon but strode out with umbrellas, zipped up waterproofs and high spirits to better their previous rounds.
The last group on the tee was made up of Diane Simpson, Barbara Parker and Carol Smith, the competition between friends was fierce as expected, the 2017 Club Champion was almost certainly amongst them.
The start was steady for Di but rocky for both Carol and Barbara. Smith managed to hold her nerve through the latter section of the front nine which was enough to maintain her lead over Simpson.
Meanwhile, in the nett competition, Lattana Hextall (33), was working her way up from ninth place overnight, to take the title of Nett Club Champion 2017.
Congratulations to both Lattana and Carol for their wonderful achievements over the weekend. Carol may now add this to her previous wins in 2010-14 and 2016, totalling seven times Ladies Club Champion! Carol gave a moving speech in which she thanked Golf At Goodwood and her fellow members, in particular the ladies, for their support since the loss of her husband, Robin. This was arguably the most difficult and most meaningful of Carol's wins and we wish her the best of luck with her continued success.
Well done Carol and Lattana!
