Le Tissier plays a day on the Downs
Le Tissier was one of the most enigmatic players to represent Southampton but this legend of south coast football, who continues to be involved in the game as a pundit for Sky Sport, is a big supporter of charities and helps raise large sums of money through golf days such as that played at Goodwood.
The event was organised by Peter Cooper Group Managing Director Darren Cooper, with the aim of raising money for the privately funded charity, Action Against Cancer. The charity is close to the company’s heart, as Darren’s own mother has been battling cancer for the last four years.
The target for the day was to generate £25,000 and Cooper was confident of meeting this. He said; “This is our fourth year and in the second and third years we raised over £20,000. Goodwood can cope with a shotgun of people and 26 teams, everyone has a buggy and the logistical organisation behind the scenes is second to none. I’ve done an awful lot of golf days – as Matt also has – and I’d have to say the Goodwood team are the best I’ve experienced in event organising.”
Following his round, Le Tissier said; “For nine holes, my golf was very good, but for the other nine it was very bad. It pretty much mirrored my football really; some days it was great, some days it was shocking! It is a challenging course, especially from the white tees, but it has been a fabulous day. Having played here and seen the organisation of the event, as well as the atmosphere that is created by the fantastic facilities, I understand why Darren chose Goodwood.”
