Benefits of exercising in water
1) Low impact fitness – land based exercises, no matter what they are cause added stress on your muscles and joints, resulting in an increased risk of injury including stress fractures and muscle strains. Hydro exercises increase the opportunities for those that are prone to stress injuries enabling them to stay fit and active. People of all ages and sizes are able to enjoy the benefits of a water based environment.
2) Resistance – the resistance that water provides can be as much as 42 times greater than what you would get from the air. This is due to the drag forces and frontal resistance which works proportionally to the effort exerted against it. Water works as a natural weight training machine, providing a resistance in all directions. Consequently increasing your muscle strength.
3) H2O heart rate – water possesses the unique ability of making your heart work more efficiently. Due to the equal pressures on your body, your heart is able to circulate blood more effectively, thanks to these pressures promoting venous return (bloody flow back to the heart). This slows your heart rate by an estimated 10-15 beats per minute compared to when the same effort is made on land.
