Maximise Your Lunch Break
- It’s stress busting. A study in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports shows that even a 30-minute lunchtime stroll can significantly boost a person’s ability to handle stress at work. So instead of eating your sandwich at your computer, get up and get outside. Whether you go for a brisk walk, or you bring your trainers to work for a run, you will return to your desk re-energised, refreshed and far better equipped to deal with the challenges of the afternoon!
- It makes you happier. Exercise releases endorphins – those feel good neurotransmitters which produce a general feeling of wellbeing. Couple that with the invigorating feeling that comes post-workout and you’ll be flying through your afternoon meetings.
- It reduces your chance of illness. Improving your fitness already does this, but sitting for long periods of time has been linked to increased risk of several conditions, including obesity and cardiovascular disease. It is also thought to lower your body’s metabolic rate. So get up and active at lunchtime!
- It improves your performance. An hour away from your desk will give your brain the chance to change focus and we often find that exercise gives you the time to think. Going for a walk, a run or spending 40 minutes in the gym will give you the mental space to resolve issues, come up with new ideas or simply think about new ways to approach your daily tasks.
